Dial-Up Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

These are the most common questions asked about our dial-up service.

Do you support v.92?

Yes! We have full v.92 access on all dialup numbers. PCM upstream and Modem On Hold (for up to 8 minutes) are also enabled.

How many minutes am I allowed per month?

Subscribers are allowed unlimited, on-demand access to the Internet. However, our dial-up connections are intermittent and NOT provided on a dedicated basis.

Dial-up sessions exceeding 12 hours may be disconnected due to inactivity during peak times.

A subscriber must be actively using their internet connection while dialed in. If you intend to leave your computer for an extended period of time, you must disconnect.

Any subscriber that is consistently connected for continuous, unbroken, periods of 24 hours or more shall be subject to having its account placed under suspension and/or terminated.

What connection speeds should I expect?

Your fastest possible connection is 56Kbps (56,000 bits per second). Please note, it is very rare for a modem to connect at this speed due to the quality of the phone lines in most areas.

Typically, 42-50Kbps is considered good performance. Some people are getting better results, some are getting worse. There are many factors that come into play with establishing a connection faster than 33.6Kbps.

Visit our ->Modem Troubleshooting page for tips on how to improve modem performance.

Why am I not getting a 56Kbps connection?

There are many factors that will affect the speed of a dial-up connection. ->See our Modem Troubleshooting page for tips.

How much disk space comes with each e-mail box?

75mb of disk space for each email account. 75mb is equivalent to 78,643,200 individual characters (letters of the alphabet, numbers, punctuation, and symbols) in an e-mail message.

How many e-mail boxes do I get with my dialup account?

You receive five (5) e-mail boxes. Your primary e-mail username will be used to connect to the Internet. The remaining four (4) boxes may be used by anyone in your household.

How do I set up an additional e-mail box?

Please call Customer Service at 802-846-4433. If you're outside Chittenden County, call toll-free: 877-397-2416.

What will my e-mail address be?

You can send and receive e-mail using username@silicondairy.net or username@moomail.net. There's no need to choose one or the other as messages sent to both addresses will be delivered to your INBOX. (Most people seem to choose "moomail.net" though!)

What is the largest file attachment I can send?

Silicon Dairy has a hard limit on file attachments of 5mb.

However, care should be taken to ensure the recipient of your attachments is capable of receiving your attachments. If you intend on sending multiple large files, consider sending one e-mail message per file.

If your files exceed 5mb, consider uploading the file to your personal web space and then simply e-mail a link to it to your recipient.
